Event Dispatch: Ringing in Lunar New Year
MBA student Daniel Yang ’26 and his wife, Ruoxu Wang, celebrated Lunar New Year with the SOM community. Observed across many Asian cultures and the most important holiday in China, Lunar New Year falls on the first new moon of the lunar calendar.
In this series, students answer quickfire questions about events across campus.
Event: Lunar New Year
Hosts: Office of Community Engagement & Dialogue; Asian, Asian-American, and Pacific Islander Association; Greater China Club; and Korea Club
Location: Snyder Forum, Evans Hall
Date: February 17, 2026
What was the event?
Daniel: A Lunar New Year celebration! In China and many other countries, there are two calendars: a traditional calendar and a lunar calendar. Lunar New Year marks the beginning of the lunar calendar.
Who showed up?
Daniel: Mostly SOM students, but I saw people from outside SOM as well. Family too! I heard about this event from my wife, who found it on CampusGroups.
What happened?
Daniel: Everyone came together to celebrate. There was calligraphy, lots of interesting cultural conversations—
Ruoxu: And food! I think lots of people came here for the food.
Daniel: Yes, Chinese food from Chef Jiang! We had dumplings, sticky rice cake, noodles, and fried rice.
Best moment?
Daniel: My favorite part was doing the calligraphy activity. It’s a yearly tradition for my family, so we were so glad to see it here.
Ruoxu: It’s good to see that SOM cares about their Chinese and Asian students—because it’s a really important festival, and we are so far from home.
Who should go next time?
Daniel: Everyone should come.
Ruoxu: As long as you can get a ticket!
