What You Need to Know about Applying to Yale SOM in Round Three
Bruce DelMonico, assistant dean for admissions, shares his best advice for applying to the MBA program in Round 3.

We’re fast approaching our Round 3 deadline on Tuesday, April 8, which brings us closer to the end of another application cycle. Around this time, I often get questions from prospective applicants about whether they should apply in Round 3. The truth is, if you want to start your MBA this August, Round 3 is your final opportunity to make that happen. With that in mind, I wanted to take a few moments to address some common questions and misconceptions about applying in the final round.
Is there space left in the class for me?
Although it’s true that Round 3 is our smallest round, we still have space available for competitive applicants. We model every year to admit applicants in Round 3, and assuming we’ve done our job well, there are plenty of opportunities for candidates whose profiles are comparable to those we’ve admitted elsewhere in the year.
Advice for international applicants
Round 3 is open to all applicants, regardless of citizenship or residency. We admit international students in this round and work closely with our Office of International Students & Scholars to manage specific visa timelines. There have historically been no issues with international students securing visas between Round 3 decision release and the start of orientation, although we do advise admitted applicants to begin the process promptly to make sure they have maximum time to complete the visa process.
Addressing gaps and job disruptions
Life happens, and having a period of unemployment or a gap in your job history isn’t disqualifying. We look to understand the context behind these pauses and how you spent that time. Use the application prompts to explain any transitions or disruptions in your career path. And remember, these factors are considered within the broader narrative of your application.
Why wait until Round 3 to apply?
You might wonder if you need to explain why you waited until Round 3 to apply. We firmly believe that the best time to apply is when you’ve prepared your strongest application, whenever that is. Perhaps you waited until Round 3 to secure a test score, build professional experience, or address a job transition. The Admissions Committee isn’t expecting you to explain specifically why Round 3. However, we are interested in learning from all applicants—regardless of the round in which they apply—why now is the right time to pursue their MBA. Additionally, if you are a Silver Scholar, Round 3 is a very common time to apply. Regardless of the topic, if you ever feel there’s something notable to explain to the admissions committee, you can always use the optional statement to provide that context.
The benefits of Round 3
While received wisdom might view applying in Round 3 as risky, I encourage you to see it as an opportunity. If you’re accepted, you’ll be starting your MBA journey in just a few months. If not, you can gain valuable feedback over the summer from our Admissions Committee to improve your application for the next cycle. We welcome reapplicants without stigma or bias, making Round 3 a beneficial step even if you plan to reapply later.
