Yale SOM and Yale Engineering Launch New Business-Technology Joint Degree

Students in the new two-year program will earn an MBA and a Master of Science.

The Yale School of Management and the Yale School of Engineering & Applied Science have established a new joint-degree program that will enable students to earn an MBA and a Master of Science in two years—one year less than would be required if taking the programs sequentially. Students will spend their first year taking Yale SOM’s integrated core curriculum; in their second year, they will complete the requirements for the MS and specialize in one of the technical disciplines offered by Yale Engineering.

This academically rigorous program is designed for students aspiring to integrate advanced technical expertise with strategic management and leadership skills, and will prepare them for impactful careers at the intersection of technology and business.

Kerwin K. Charles, the Indra K. Nooyi Dean and Frederick W. Beinecke Professor of Economics, Policy, and Management at Yale SOM, said that the new program will produce leaders who can navigate the currents of a tech-driven age. “Many of the big questions of our time are defined by the interrelation of business and technology,” said Charles. “Our joint-degree students will gain domain mastery in technical fields, like biomedical engineering and computer science, while also getting the benefit of Yale SOM’s integrated curriculum, which uniquely enhances understanding of the wide-ranging impact of business decisions and the many obligations of a leader to the broader society.”

Students in the joint-degree program will have full access to the resources and communities of both schools. This includes career development resources, professional advising, alumni networks, extracurricular activities, and student clubs.

Jeffrey F. Brock, Yale Engineering Dean and the William S. Massey Professor of Mathematics, said that the new program will draw on diverse Yale strengths. “Students seeking the leading edge of knowledge in both technology and management will find it in this program,” said Brock. “They will study with the very best faculty in areas from data analytics to materials science to organizational behavior, alongside smart, motivated peers. They’ll leave Yale ready for careers shaping the future of tech and business.”

The new program joins a list of joint-degree programs offered by Yale SOM and Yale Engineering with other schools across the university. Yale SOM also offers a Master’s in Technology Management, a one-year program for graduates of engineering and other technical programs at Yale College.

Students interested in the joint-degree program must apply and be admitted to both programs independently. Details are available on the SOM website.
