Yale SOM Strengthens Nonprofit Board Fellows Program with Support from Golub Capital

A major gift from Golub Capital will help the school provide greater resources and institutional support to students who serve on boards in and around New Haven. The expanded program is now part of the Golub Capital Nonprofit Board Fellows Network, which includes similar programs at six other schools.

With generous support from Golub Capital, the Yale School of Management will substantially expand and strengthen its Nonprofit Board Fellows program, which provides training and other support for business students to serve as nonvoting members on the boards of nonprofit organizations in the New Haven area. The enhanced Golub Capital Nonprofit Board Fellows Program will join similar programs from six other business schools as part of the Golub Capital Nonprofit Board Fellows Network.

David Golub, president of Golub Capital, said that the firm established the network to maximize positive impact. “Good board members dramatically improve the effectiveness of nonprofits,” said Golub. “The Golub Capital Nonprofit Board Fellows Network will deepen the pool of impactful nonprofit board members, while fostering collaboration among leading business schools around how to support positive social impact.”

Yale SOM Dean Kerwin Charles said that Golub Capital’s support would help the school expand its impact. “Our students are deeply committed to both developing rigorous business skills and finding their individual paths to meaningful impact on society. The enhancements to the Golub Capital Nonprofit Board Fellows Program will have multiple benefits: for our students, for the organizations where they dedicate their efforts, and for the broader community. We are grateful to Golub Capital for making this initiative possible.”

Yale SOM’s Program on Social Enterprise, Innovation, and Impact (PSEII) will oversee the expanded Golub Capital Nonprofit Board Fellows Program. Paige MacLean, lecturer in the practice of management, will serve as faculty advisor to the program. PSEII will also offer a for-credit course for board fellows, assemble an alumni advisory committee, and develop a set of teaching case studies that can be used across the network.

Judith Chevalier, the William S. Beinecke Professor of Finance and Economics and Faculty Director for PSEII, commented: “This gift and the formation of the Golub Capital Nonprofit Board Fellows Network begin an exciting new chapter for the Yale School of Management’s longstanding commitment to using business tools for social good. We are energized by this opportunity to enhance our service to the community, to deepen our students’ skills, and to engage with peers throughout the network.”

Yale SOM’s Golub Capital Nonprofit Board Fellows Program was previously an independent student organization and will continue to have strong student leadership, building upon the existing structure that has helped connect students and nonprofits for more than a decade, including organizations such as Amistad Academy, CitySeed, IRIS, and New Haven Reads.

One of this year’s student leaders, Jordan Vega ’25, commented: “We are deeply honored and thrilled to receive Golub Capital's generous support and to join their inaugural Board Fellows Network! This incredible opportunity will allow us to greatly expand Yale SOM’s Nonprofit Board Fellows program and significantly advance our mission to inspire and develop leaders who will make a positive impact on business and society.”
