Internship Spotlight: Shane Mumma ’25, HP
After reviewing tech products online for years, Shane Mumma ’25 transitioned to developing them with a summer internship at a leading computer manufacturer.
We asked rising second-year MBA students to check in from their summer internships, where they applied the lessons of their first year at Yale SOM.

I spent this summer as a product management intern at HP, which was a great experience. Coming into Yale SOM with a passion for technology, I knew I wanted to leverage my time at grad school to explore product management. I love consumer electronics, and after spending more than eight years reviewing them on YouTube, I’ve been excited to get on the other side and actually help make those products great.
The product I focused on during my internship was the HP All-In Plan. Launched in February, this new subscription service provides consumers with everything they need to print at home. For a low monthly fee, the customer gets a new printer, ink sent to them when they run out, support, and more. It was fascinating to work on a startup-like idea within such a huge and established company.
In my role, I led a variety of different projects aimed at improving this plan. These ranged from finding features to add to the service in order to increase customer acquisition and retention to examining new ideas for streamlining the enrollment process on a variety of platforms. Our Customer class provided a solid background of frameworks to use for the work itself, while Managing Groups and Teams was good preparation for working with a diverse set of people at HP.
Outside of these projects, HP also hosted some fun in-person events. One week, several colleagues who work remotely or in other offices flew to Vancouver so that we could work together and enjoy offsite activities like dinners and wine-tasting. We also enjoyed intern events like a BBQ, a kayaking trip, and a site visit to another HP office in Corvallis, Oregon.
I also can’t forget to mention how instrumental SOM was in facilitating this summer internship. After I participated in the SOM Tech Club’s winter break trip to San Francisco, where we visited several tech companies in the Bay Area including HP, the company jumped to the top of the list of places I wanted to intern. I was really energized by seeing their innovations first-hand, talking to the SOM alumni there, and hearing a talk about how exciting product management can be at the company.
Interestingly, that trip was my first time visiting the West Coast, and this summer was also my first time living there. It was nice to see a different part of the country, and the Portland metro area (where Vancouver, Washington, is located) is very pretty in the summer. The weather is way cooler than the hot summers I’m used to in Georgia! I also got to take advantage of being out west by visiting friends interning in Seattle and Denver (including another SOMer interning at HP there), which was a lot of fun.
I’m super excited to return to New Haven to complete my second year at SOM. I’ve loved my time here so far, and I’ve already grown a lot professionally and personally. I’m looking forward to another great year!
