SOMPost August 2021: New year, new degree, new students, new recruiting opportunities

Yale SOM Orientation Week 2021

Happy new year!

As of this writing, in-person orientation for the newest Yale SOM students is underway and we are looking forward to starting a new year of campus recruiting. Below is a quick review of what has happened this past month, as well as opportunities and guidelines for in-person and virtual recruiting. As always, reach out to us with anything at som.recruiting@yale.edu.

 WHAT'S HAPPENED

The new Master’s Degree in Asset Management launches this month!

The one-year Master’s Degree in Asset Management is designed for recent university graduates and early career students looking to launch careers in asset management. Students in this program are recruiting for off-cycle/ school-year internships to fulfill a practical experience requirement. They also are recruiting for post-graduation roles starting May 2022. In July, the CDO and Faculty Director Tobias J. Moskowitz hosted an employer introduction to highlight the program’s genesis, details, and recruiting opportunities; a recording is available per request.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

In-person recruiting: the most FA of FAQs

Although classes will be in-person this year, all recruiting remains virtual as Yale SOM currently is allowing campus visitors for academic purposes only, and even then, on a very limited basis. We strongly discourage any in-person recruiting events this fall. Off-campus events may occur only if they are in keeping with the spirit of inclusivity in recruiting. These are unique and challenging times during which students and recruiters may have to confront choices unrelated to their future career decisions or success. Recognizing this, and honoring the value of inclusivity in recruiting, the following recruiting policies are in place for off-campus events:

  1. Local rules dictate – in Connecticut, each city can establish its own rules for gathering, masking, etc.
  2. Student participation in an in-person event cannot be material to a student’s candidacy or necessary to succeed in the recruiting process
  3. Employers must offer a virtual alternative to connect and engage with students
  4. At no point can a student’s health and/or vaccination status be asked or assumed based on in-person participation (or not)

IPrepSOM provides early access to students before a September application deadline

IPrepSOM is a series of interview prep sessions hosted by employers that are eager to support the education and training of Yale SOM students. Students learn what to expect in the interview process, and gain exposure to organizational culture by learning how an employer evaluates success. This August session is ideal for employers with September job application deadlines for full-time roles. Register for your preferred date, August 30 or 31, and time.

Send in the swag

Show your recruiting swagger this year! Branded materials can bring energy to the recruiting process and extend your recruiting brand’s reach beyond the virtual world. The Yale SOM CDO will host a swag table to display your items and make them accessible to students. If interested in sending in items to share, contact som.recruiting@yale.edu or your Employer Partnership Manager, and we will help coordinate.

Resumes are ready

Resumes for graduating students are currently available in 12Twenty, our career management system. A free employer account is required to access. The first-year MBAs resumes will release September 7 and club specific resumes will release September 20. The resume database is frequently updated as students gain experiences, refine career goals, and accept offers; we recommend you re-visit the resume database as frequently as needed to ensure you are benefitting from the latest version.

Sponsor a club

Sponsor one or more of the 50+ student clubs to showcase your commitment to advancing these student interests and to have a long-term branding presence throughout the year. A complete list of clubs and sponsorship levels and benefits is on our website. If you have questions or engagement ideas for student clubs, please first reach out to your Employer Partnership Manager for insights and direction, as EPMs serve as liaisons between employers and club officers.

WHAT'S NEXT

A score of upcoming CDO hosted recruiting events

With over twenty multi-employer events scheduled throughout the year, there likely is an ideal event for your organization. If you prefer to schedule your own single employer-hosted event, request one through 12Twenty – we will be happy to help you navigate timing, review a format, and/or discuss compelling content. Below are the upcoming September events:
