Yale SOM Launches New Publication, Asking, "Can We Make Management a Profession?"

This spring the Yale School of Management published Q1, the first edition of a magazine for alumni and friends of the school.

This spring the Yale School of Management published Q1, the first edition of a magazine for alumni and friends of the school.

Each issue will raise an important contemporary management question and then gather together the responses of scholars, practitioners, and SOM and other Yale alumni. The inaugural question is, “Can we make management a profession?”

Articles in Q1 include:

  • “Can we make management a profession?” -- a discussion with Joel M. Podolny, Dean of Yale SOM, and Rakesh Khurana, associate professor of business administration at Harvard Business School

  • “Should business be personal?” -- a profile of Trish Karter ’82, CEO and president of Dancing Deer Baking Company

  • “Can business schools be professional schools?” -- an interview with Jeffrey Pfeffer, the Thomas D. Dee II Professor of Organizational Behavior at the Stanford Graduate School of Business

  • “The chief professional?” -- a roundtable discussion about the role of the CEO with Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, Senior Associate Dean for Executive Programs and Lester Crown Professor in the Practice of Management at Yale SOM, Nell Minow, cofounder and editor of the Corporate Library, John C. Bogle, founder of the Vanguard Group, Inc., Austin Ligon ’80, cofounder and retired CEO of CarMax, Inc., and E.V. “Rick” Goings, chairman and CEO, Tupperware Corporation

Q1 includes a separate School Notes section, with news from SOM and class notes.
