Unlocking My Limits: An EMBA Journey of Growth, Grit, and Global Mindset

Margaret Alabi ’25 reflects on her first semester in the MBA for Executives program.

Who willingly signs up for three of life’s major life stressors all at once? I unwittingly did when I was accepted into the MBA for Executives program at the same time I started a new job requiring me to move. Suffice it to say, the past six months have been a whirlwind of change and growth as I embarked on my executive MBA program while simultaneously moving to a new city and starting a global role. It was an intense period filled with challenges and opportunities that pushed me outside of my comfort zone.

That notwithstanding, I am grateful for the chance that this journey has provided me to level up and stretch my limits. Through the combination of academic learning and real-world experiences, I have been empowered to apply the theoretical concepts I learned in class directly to my role in patient advocacy. This has elevated my workplace conversations and my impact on those I serve. Not one weekend passes without me being awed by the privilege afforded me to learn and grow with the amazing individuals who comprise my cohort! My classmates make every bit of this experience worth it, and their input is just as valuable as the curriculum.

Thus far, Customer and Competitor have been my favorite courses. Through case studies and real-life examples, these courses provided valuable insights into understanding the market dynamics and how to position oneself in a competitive landscape effectively.

In Customer, Professor K. Sudhir illustrated the importance of truly understanding the target audience’s needs and desires. By delving deep into their motivations and pain points, I learned how to develop strategies that not only cater to their preferences but also create long-lasting relationships.

Competitor shed light on the competitive forces that shape strategy. Professor Evangelia Chalioti skillfully laid out the different strategies competitors employ to gain market share. I have a better understanding of how firms identify gaps in the market that can be exploited to their advantage. Overall, these classes have given me a solid foundation and provided me with invaluable knowledge that will undoubtedly shape my future career endeavors.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the importance of ensuring that you have a strong, engaged, and readily available support system during the EMBA program. My sister and my standard poodles, Belle, Beau, and Banksy, have made navigating these massive life changes possible. Just remember—whatever you thought you knew about yourself before starting this journey will be completely upended as you work to meet the demands of the program, your job, and your loved ones. Embrace it!

Looking ahead with enthusiasm toward the next phase of this transformative journey, I am feeling limitless. I am confident that the skills acquired during these initial months will continue  to shape me into a well-rounded professional capable of successfully navigating complex business landscapes. I am excited to apply these learnings as I continue this exciting journey toward personal growth and success.
