Lead product manager, trust and safety, Hinge

Over the last decade, the technology sector has evolved significantly. Recently, we’ve seen consolidations and mass layoffs across larger tech firms, which have created a lot of uncertainty. It’s made me think about how I can differentiate myself.

For this next stage of my career, I want to lead and motivate teams, make better product decisions, and maybe eventually move into something more entrepreneurial. I want to develop a well-rounded understanding of what it takes to build and manage a business—which is what brought me to Yale SOM.

Modeling Managerial Decisions was a particularly helpful course. The class is led by two professors; one brings an analytical, data-oriented perspective, and the other offers a more psychological lens. When you work in tech, where most things are zeroes and ones, it’s easy to over-index on data and lose sight of the human element. I took that perspective back to work. When we’re pitching new ideas, I still consider the data, and I also ask: What are the human impacts? What core problems are we solving? How do we bake diverse perspectives into the solution?

As a product manager, I lead cross-functional initiatives partnering with engineering, design, and legal teams. The key to building consensus across many perspectives is understanding the broader impact on the business and customers. My elective course Legal Context of Management was a great opportunity to explore how we can turn legal and social risks into competitive advantages that define long-term success.

Coming from the UK, it’s been interesting to reflect on the differences in higher education in the U.S. The sense of community here at Yale has been refreshing. As soon as I accepted my place, there were alumni reaching out wanting to connect. It never felt transactional. There was a genuine interest in my hopes for the program and how they could help.

I aspire to be an authentic and inclusive leader. During my time here, I’ve taken time to reflect. What are the core values that are going to drive me forward? How do I want to create that inclusive culture? The program has helped me gain clarity on what kind of leader I am and where to go next.
