What was your favorite memory from your first year?
A few weeks into school, Student Life organized "Tite n/'Brite," one of the first big social events of the fall. My roommates and I headed to a thrift store in New Haven to find our outfits, and a quick shopping trip turned into a fashion show in the corner of the store, with more sequined tops than I would want to admit. That evening, seven or eight of us crammed into my apartment to get ready. It was chaotic and loud, and somewhere in the middle of helping each other with outfits and laughing at nothing in particular, I realized that these were my people.
SOM had taken over a bar for the night. There were shiny accessories to wear, face tattoos, and music I had never heard before. A classmate from Colombia pulled me onto the dance floor and taught me to dance to her music. I have not stopped listening to it since. At one point, I looked around and thought: I am dancing with people from more than 20 countries I've never been to, and it feels completely natural!
The excitement carried straight into the next morning in class. People who had been acquaintances the day before were already making plans for the next night out. That morning reminded me that community here is not something that builds slowly over time. It arrives everywhere and all at once: in a thrift store dressing room, on the dance floor, over maple ice cream at Elena's on Orange, or while walking to school on a perfect New Haven autumn evening. If you are wondering what being at SOM feels like, it feels like that.
