Joint MD/MBA Program Celebrates 25th Graduating Class

Seven MD/MBA students will join an alumni community of over 100 graduates.

This year, Yale’s MD/MBA program celebrated its 25th graduating class, with seven members of the Class of 2026 earning degrees from both SOM and the Yale School of Medicine.

The MD/MBA program trains physicians capable of bridging clinical care and management. The five-year program includes three years at the School of Medicine, one year completing SOM’s core curriculum, and a final year taking electives across both schools.

The dual-degree program was founded in 1998 by Howard Forman, a practicing radiologist who teaches at SOM, Yale College, and the School of Medicine. Forman also serves as faculty director of the healthcare curriculum for the MBA for Executives program and the Health Care Management program at the Yale School of Public Health.

“The MD/MBA program arose from the desire of some of our brightest medical students to avail themselves of the world-class educational opportunity at the School of Management,” said Forman, the program’s longtime director.

Since the program’s founding, more than 100 students have earned the joint degree.

“They have gone on to complete dozens of specialties in medicine; many are now full professors in academic departments, chief medical officers, entrepreneurs, active leaders in their clinical practices, corporate leaders, policy leaders, global health leaders, and much, much more,” Forman said. “We see their positive impact in their scholarship, their successes at improving clinical care, and their ability to shine a light on long-neglected areas.”
