Physicians and Hospitals Face a Changing Sector

Graduates of Yale SOM and the Yale School of Public Health in the healthcare industry discussed the physician’s role in the rapidly evolving healthcare sector at an alumni event on March 19.

The changing relationship between physicians and hospitals was cited by hospital executives in a recent national survey as one of the industry’s most difficult challenges, according to Bruce Cummings SPH ’77, CEO of Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, who moderated the discussion.

“More than any other party, physicians essentially determine both the hospital’s revenue streams as well as its costs,” Cummings said. “This has been true in the fee-for-volume driven world that we now inhabit, and it will be even more true as the landscape evolves toward volume-based or outcome-driven payment arrangements.”
