Mathletics Final Project and Week 11 Football Rankings
It's just about that time of the semester where our focus in many classes shifts to our term projects. For Mathletics, we get to pick our own topics and my group has chosen to evaluate the playoff systems of the 3 major sports leagues (MLB, NBA, NFL) to see which one most effectively selects the best team. My hypothesis is that the NBA does due to its long series and widespread playoff participation, though I will report back our results after we've conducted the research. In our last post, Koopman prize winning professor Ed Kaplan provided us with up-to-the minute football rankings. Listed below are the updated rankings for Week 11. The Packers are still tops, almost entirely due to their offense. San Francisco is next, but with greater contribution from their defense. The Jets loss to the Patriots hurt the Jets much more than it helped the Pats; the Jets really tumbled in the rankings (Professor Kaplan is a Pats fan, I'm a Jets fan).
