From the Assistant Director of Admissions: What Happens After You Hit ‘Submit’

As I’m writing this blog post, our Round 1 application deadline is right around the corner; it will have just passed by the time you read this. The admissions office is buzzing with phone calls, emails, and a sense of excitement as we begin reviewing applications for the Class of 2020. With such a strong applicant pool, it is a pleasure to read the applications and get to know some incredible global citizens.

If you have submitted an application for Round 1, let me be the first to say congratulations. From crafting your essays to asking for letters of recommendations, it is a long journey, and you should be extremely proud. If you plan to submit for a later round, let me also say congratulations. Pursuing your MAM degree is a huge decision, and we are thrilled that you have decided to apply to Yale SOM.

While you may have familiarized yourself with our website, attended an event, or met a member of our admissions team, you may not know what happens after you submit your application. This period can seem a bit mysterious; hopefully I can shed some light on it.

The days after you finish assembling your application and finally click the submit button may seem quiet on your end, but it is the opposite in the admissions office, where things suddenly get very busy. Once we receive all applications for the round, our team members carefully read through each one. We then come together to discuss the applicants and talk about who we’d like to get to know better through the interview process. Interviews are extended by invitation only and all interviews are conducted over Skype with a member of the Admissions Committee. Since our applicants hail from many different countries and time zones, we offer a variety of interview timeslots. Although every student who is ultimately admitted will have had an interview, not receiving an interview invitation at the same time as one of your friends or classmates does not mean that you will not eventually be interviewed within the round, or even in a later round.
