Yale SOM DC Alumni Summer Picnic
Saturday, Jun 27 2015 at 4:00 - 10:00 pm EDT
The Yale SOM DC Alumni Club will be throwing a summer picnic at Rob and Michela's summer house, "Gum Thicket," on June 27, 2015 from noon to 6pm. SOM Alum Zeph Taylor has volunteered to barbecue a whole pig, and we'll have brisket, crab and other food available. The BBQ and crabs will start at 1pm, and we expect to have a local band for the day. Gum Thicket has a tennis court, pool, fleet of kayaks, Boston Whaler, fishing, games, beach, bikes and numerous other activities to keep SOM alums and families busy. (For those of you who are so inclined to show off your tennis skills, we'll be setting up a tennis tournament.) There is also a cool hi-tech scientific oyster raising facility on the island, and we will be arranging tours if enough alums are interested (think white pullovers and booties). Bring towels, lawn chairs, tennis equipment, swim suits and anything else that you'd take to the beach! Date: June 27, 2015, noon to 6pm Location: 1071 Gum Thicket Rd, Gwynn, VA 23066 Pricing: $35 per adult, $70 for two adults (kids free) Register: http://event-reg.som.yale.edu/signup/dc-summer-picnic-2015 Directions: We would recommend leaving the DC area by no later than 9:30am on Saturday. Please see this PDF for directions. Ride Share: We understand that not everyone who lives in the DC metropolitan area has access to a car, so we've set up a Google Spreadsheet (here) for both car owners and riders to put down their information. Put your name on the list, and we'll do our best to match riders with someone who has a car. Lodging: For those individuals who might want to spend the night nearby, there are a number of options. On Gwynn's Island itself and in nearby Mathews, there are rental cottages and B&Bs. There are two inexpensive but more than adequate hotels in Gloucester, about 25 miles away in the direction of Williamsburg, and if enough individuals get back to us (here) before May 21, we'll see if we can get some rooms set aside at a discount. If you're looking for a more luxurious stay, the Tides Inn Resort is slightly north about 20 miles away and a terrific place to golf, etc. Williamsburg (and Jamestown, Yorktown, and Busch Gardens) are clustered together about an hour southwest of Gwynn's Island. If you're thinking about Williamsburg or Busch Gardens for Sunday (kids of all ages love it) then you might want to consider seeing if you can stay in a period house in Colonial Williamsburg.
