A SPRING MORNING DISCOVERING NYC'S NEWEST ART NEIGHBORHOOD Visit The Essex Street Market, beautiful art studios, cutting edge galleries and New York's oldest matzoh factory all within one of New York's richest cultural neighborhoods. Register here: http://events.som.yale.edu/index.php?eventid=732 (Alumni $40, Students $25) We'll begin at Cuchifritos, an alternative art space inside the Essex Street Market (a neighborhood landmark since 1939 and a local treasure). We will continue on to the CVS building (Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center--an amazing institution with a theatre, gallery and studios) where we will meet with 7 up-and-coming painters in their studios including: Lisa Leboefsky : a young artist whose beautiful paintings on aluminum panels are much in demand (she is currently exhibiting with DFN Gallery (NY), Windham Fine Arts (Windham, NY) and Sarah Bain Gallery (SF) Julia Schwadron , a recent Joan Mitchell fellow at the Vermont Studio Center. She will show us the large scale paintings she is working on, before she leaves for a year as a Visiting Art Professor at the University of Chang Mai in Thailand. Melanie Vote is represented by DFN Gallery and is preparing for a solo show at New Jersey City University this fall. She'll lead is through her fascinating process of creating models of invented landscapes for her psychologically loaded paintings. We will conclude at Sloan Fine Arts--a new gallery around the corner from the artists' studios--and across the street from Streits, New York's oldest matzoh factory.
