Position Focus:
The Director will provide strategic leadership, oversight, and administration for staff employees in: HR policy, talent recruitment, compensation strategies, employee relations, leave and accommodation administration, performance review and other compliance administration. With staff in more than 25 departments, this position is critical for advancing individual and organizational productivity and performance. Reporting to Yale School of Management (SOM) Chief Administrative Officer with a dotted report to the Associate Director, Employee Relations (ER), Yale University, this role is responsible for serving as a strategic partner and advisor across SOM, delivering value-added service by anticipating issues and developing solutions consistent with the school’s goals for organizational success.
Essential Duties:
- Direct and manage complex talent and people functions. Provide guidance in interpreting and applying federal, state and university policy, procedures, contractual obligations, and employment law to a variety of employment situations. Serves as primary point of contact for managers and staff, and liaison between the school and university HR teams/functions.
- In conjunction with department heads and other staff, review and analyze staffing needs to support SOM’s mission. Consult and provide guidance on organizational issues including total reorganizations. Serve as a key advisor on organizational development and change initiatives, driving transformation.
- Oversee recruiting activity and processes including develop recruitment strategies, guide hiring supervisors, manage interview and reference process, manage and serve on search committees. Partner with the University recruitment to support and lead strategic talent acquisition efforts, ensuring the hiring of talented candidates. Develop complex compensation structures for new hires and ongoing staff. Administer the use of pool, temp, vendor, L33 student and contract employees and monitor to ensure compliance with university requirements.
- Oversee comprehensive performance management processes, including goal setting, performance appraisals and development planning. Lead performance review and salary planning processes for exempt staff, oversee the implementation of related follow-up. Guide supervisors and managers in the development of retention, development and performance improvement plans. Support CAO in determining annual increases for exempt staff based on evaluations, and for equity, and retention.
- Solicit succession planning data during the review process including recommendations for high potential group, retention, career aspirations, etc. Engage with leadership in supporting the development of high potential talent. Build a talent database to use in staffing discussions and planning.
- Serve as confidential resource within SOM HR, responding to emerging issues, ideas, and challenges. Works collaboratively on client issues, build and maintain positive working relationships with Union representatives. Serve as primary school resource for bargaining agreements. Meet with union stewards and University Labor Relations to resolve union issues. Lead investigations into employee relations concerns. Educate, advise, and coach managers and assist staff in resolving issues. Represent school in formal grievances and other complaint processes.
- Responsible for administrative processes and compliance with required training, accommodation requests, leave management, fixed duration appointments, out-of-state work and other policy compliance requirements.
- Partner with University Employee Relations to ensure consistent practices and policies are applied and engage in ER functional activities as necessary.
- Ensure that all payroll/HR transactions (promotions, reclassifications, transfers, terminations, extra compensation) are accurate and processed in a timely manner. Serve as lead for health and safety concerns and liaison for Workers Compensation cases. Formulate and implement enhancements to HR services relevant to this role’s scope. Ensure personnel records are accurate.
- Collaborate closely with the school’s leadership team to ensure comprehensive and integrated service delivery across the institution. Makes recommendations for improvement across all facets of operations.
- Responsible for recruiting budget, overseeing staff slot monitoring with Business Operations and developing a reporting infrastructure to analyze trends in turnover, hiring, promotions, separations, etc.
- Work closely with the Office of General Counsel and other central functions to determine appropriate methods of meeting unique staffing needs, such as those of the Yale Center Beijing or other individualized agreements.
- Responsible for leading and developing exempt and nonexempt staff.

Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Industrial Relations or related field and six years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Knowledge of staffing, compensation, employment law, labor relations, training and development, benefits and HRIS applications. Proficiency with Microsoft Word/Excel, databases, and other/HRIS systems.

- Demonstrated success in detailed work requiring accuracy, a high level of productivity, organization, and a sense of urgency. Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability.
- Developed organizational and interpersonal business skills and ability to work effectively within a diverse organization. Experience building robust and lasting relationships with senior human resources and business leaders.
Preferred:
Experience in higher education or a similar complex organization while functioning in a matrixed team setting.
