[WEBINAR] YBlockchain? Episode 007:

The Crypto Meltdown

Join us on Monday, September 26 from 12pm - 1pm ET for a virtual webinar as Diana Barrero Zalles ’17 will interview J. Gdanski, the Founder and CEO of Evertas, where he has a s led Evertas’ technical development and underwriting, as well as secured multiple fund rounds from top investors; he is a security, privacy, and risk expert. J. Gdanski, will share his insights on the role of insurance, an emerging yet much needed solution for crypto markets.

Crypto markets are known for their volatility, and today we find ourselves in a bear market.  As this space develops from its early stages, we can look back to several instances of excessive hype followed by a downturn.  Most recently, crypto has lost $2 trillion in value since its last peak in 2021.  Yet this “crypto winter” also shows us how this market has developed thus far.  The emergence of debt markets, through both centralized crypto lending platforms and DeFi (decentralized finance) lending applications, reveal how the opportunities of alternative credit do not come without risks and repercussions of excessive leverage.  The collapse of TerraUSD, an algorithmic stablecoin designed to maintain a stable price through an automated mechanism to keep supply and demand in equilibrium, and the following crypto market crash, reveal the extent of systemic risk and contagion due to the interconnectedness of projects.  The following liquidation of the hedge fund Three Arrows Capital and the bankruptcy of major crypto lender Celsius Network have also had major ripple effects.  What really happened and what are the lessons we can learn from this?  How can we address the risks brought by this abrupt crash and create the right safeguards to ensure trust and credibility?
