NEW HAVEN - May 2023 – The Yale Chief Executive Leadership Institute (CELI) is pleased to announce a $2 million grant from The Starr Foundation. Maurice R. “Hank” Greenberg is chairman of The Starr Foundation and serves as chairman and CEO of Starr Insurance Companies.

The Foundation’s generous contribution will help fund the Yale CELI CEO Global Diplomacy Initiative, which builds on CELI’s body of existing programming to further engage leading CEOs of US multinational corporations in advancing global prosperity, harmony, and security in an increasingly fragile world. The contribution will also fund a diverse array of CELI programming, ranging from CELI CEO forums and events in the United States to CELI research initiatives that assess domestic business, political, and societal challenges.

Existing CELI programming includes efforts to buttress US economic security in the aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, including the reshoring of global supply chains and corporate exits from Russia; the development of effective economic sanctions that advance rather US national interests; and building resilience and self-sufficiency within national security-sensitive sectors.

Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, the Founder and President of the Yale Chief Executive Leadership Institute, and Senior Associate Dean for Leadership Studies and Lester Crown Professor in Management Practice commented:

“I am deeply grateful to The Starr Foundation and my friend Hank Greenberg for their support over many years. Hank is a well-known global business leader and philanthropist. But he’s also an admired international statesman who bridges the worlds of business, politics, and diplomacy and has had a transformative impact on the world stage. In the last few months, Hank has launched the Morefar Project, his visionary initiative to bring together leaders from the US and China to help repair the critical bilateral relationship between the two countries.”

Under Mr. Greenberg’s leadership, The Starr Foundation has made more than $4 billion in grants to many academic, medical, cultural, and public policy organizations worldwide.  The Starr Foundation was established in 1955 by Cornelius Vander Starr, an insurance entrepreneur who founded C.V. Starr & Co. and other companies.  Mr. Starr named Mr. Greenberg as his successor in 1968.
