The conference was organized by the Yale Alumni Real Estate Association group and chaired by Yale School of Management alum Francis Lively ‘15. The conference was hosted by the Yale School of Management International Center for Finance.
The purpose of the conference is broader than simply “an industry gathering.” Instead, it is a venue to focus on new ideas and trends shaping a field that has a potential impact on the fabric of our communities.
The conference began the previous night on Thursday, September 22 with a welcome cocktail reception at the newly renovated Hotel Marcel. Attendees had the opportunity to connect and take tours of the hotel that features sustainable engineering using solar electricity to power the entire building.

Innovation and new business formation is not common or easy in our tradition-bound industry. Our five panelists - all Yale graduates - have created new companies from very diverse, creative ideas. They share with us their start-up experiences, from initial concept to realization, their motivations and mission, and the continuing challenges and rewards of a start-up.
The discussion provides a context and framework to understand place-based incentive programs for the real estate industry, like OZs, from their earliest days to now. Then they dive into the good, the bad, and the ugly with OZs. In conversation with experts on the ground, we learn about happened when OZ funding was actually deployed, discuss what the future looks like for this incentive and get a peek at a new generation of public incentives that could be inspired by OZs that are being created to meet the growing demands for affordable housing, job creation, and downtown revitalization across the United States.
