Assistant Dean & Anita and Joshua Bekenstein ’80 B.A. Executive Director of The Broad Center at Yale SOM
Hanseul Kang is assistant dean and the inaugural Anita and Joshua Bekenstein ’80 B.A. Executive Director of The Broad Center at the Yale School of Management. The Broad Center at Yale SOM fosters the ideas, policies, and leadership to help all K-12 students—particularly those from historically underserved communities—to learn and thrive.
Most recently, Hanseul served as the District of Columbia State Superintendent of Education from 2015 to 2020. She provided strategic vision, clear direction, and steady leadership to D.C.’s state education agency, the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), which serves over 90,000 students in public schools across more than 60 local education agencies. Under Hanseul’s leadership, the District of Columbia continued to make major strides in student achievement outcomes as OSSE took important steps to sustain, accelerate, and deepen progress for all students. Hanseul previously served as chief of staff for the Tennessee Department of Education from 2011 to 2015, and started her career as a high school social studies teacher in rural New Mexico.
Hanseul holds a BS in international politics from Georgetown University and a JD from Harvard Law School. She was a Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholar, and is a Pahara Fellow and an alum of The Broad Residency (TBR 2012-14).
Deputy Director
In Katina's role as Deputy Director at The Broad Center, she provides thought partnership and leadership for the Center's programs, including building diverse cohorts of K-12 leaders for the Center's leadership development programs, and she has developed a new alumni engagement strategy to foster a unified culture among both legacy and new Broad alumni. Prior to this, Katina served as Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy & Operations Officer at the National Institute for Reproductive Health, where she led equity and inclusion initiatives, managed key departments, and spearheaded the organization’s COVID-19 response. Katina also served as Managing Director of Data & Operations at KIPP NYC, where she directed operational and data strategies for a network of 13 schools serving over 5,000 students, ensuring financial sustainability and strategic growth. Earlier in her career, she held positions at the Tennessee and Connecticut State Departments of Education.
Katina holds an MBA from the University of Michigan, a JD from Cornell Law School, and a BA from Trinity Washington University. She is also an alum of The Broad Residency (2012-14).
Associate Director, Recruitment and Engagement
Dr. Jourdan T. Brooks is a higher education strategist with nearly a decade of experience advancing equity in education and finance. At The Broad Center, he leads the executive coaching program and serves on the selection committee for its flagship programs, aiming to drive transformative leadership development for K-12 leaders. Previously, at the Yale School of Management, Jourdan led strategic equity initiatives for the full-time MBA program, focusing on recruiting and retaining underrepresented students. In his current role, Jourdan is focused on fostering dynamic, lifelong connections among the alumni network and SOM, ensuring alumni voices continue to shape and strengthen the Broad community and Yale SOM.
Director of Recruitment and Selection
As Director of Recruitment and Selection for The Broad Center at Yale SOM, Katie leads the admissions strategy and processes for the Master’s in Public Education Management and Fellowship for Public Education Leadership. In this role, she ensures that diverse cohorts of leaders committed to excellence and equity for K-12 students are selected for both programs each year. Prior to joining The Broad Center, Katie spent seven years working in MBA admissions and diversity, equity, and inclusion at Columbia Business School. Earlier in her career, she was a journalist covering private equity. Katie holds a Bachelor’s in English from Smith College and a Master’s in Sociology and Education Policy from Teachers College, Columbia University.
Program Coordinator
As Program Coordinator at The Broad Center at Yale SOM, Taylor supports both the Admissions and Alumni teams by applying operational expertise to enhance processes, optimize resources, and achieve organizational objectives. Before joining The Broad Center, Taylor gained eight years of experience as an event project manager across the events and education sectors. Taylor holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sports and Entertainment Management from Johnson & Wales University and an MBA from Louisiana State University.
Program Coordinator
As Program Coordinator for The Broad Center, Monica’s primary role is to support both the Master’s and Fellowship programs with operations related to our students and Fellows. Prior to joining TBC, Monica spent two years as a Program Coordinator on the Leadership Giving team and as a member of The Task Force for Inclusive Excellence; a team created to address the need to diversify the donor pipeline for Yale College alumni. Before coming to Yale, Monica worked for 11 years in human services, where she worked with one of New Haven’s most marginalized communities to bring them from homelessness to housed.
Monica is a native of New Haven with a passion for equipping our underserved school districts with transformative policies and practices.
Director of Academic and Student Affairs
David Negrón currently serves as the Director of Academic and Student Affairs at The Broad Center, where he leads programming for the The Master's in Public Education program. Prior to The Broad Center, David spent over three years at Relay Graduate School of Education, where he advanced from Director of Campus Affairs to Senior Director of Teacher Preparation. David has also held roles at the School Empowerment Network and the NYC Department of Education. David's career reflects his dedication to supporting educators and students in achieving excellence across diverse educational environments. He holds a Bachelor's from New York University and an Master's of Public Administration from Baruch College.
Associate Director
Colleen joined The Broad Center team in February 2020, after previously serving as Assistant Director in the Yale SOM Dean's Office. At The Broad Center, Colleen leads The Broad Fellowship program, supporting senior-level system leaders in their learning and cohort experience. She also supports the research pillar for TBC at SOM and works on a range of projects related to TBC’s operations.
She completed her M.A. in Higher and Postsecondary Education at Teachers College, Columbia University as a part-time student while working at the Office of Alumni Affairs at Yale Law School. Prior to working at Yale, Colleen advocated on behalf of undocumented immigrant families in New Haven in her prior roles as a paralegal and medical interpreter and activist.
Senior Associate Director, The Broad Center and Alumni Relations Office
Johanna Tondalo serves as the Senior Associate Director for The Broad Center and Alumni Relations teams. With over a decade of experience in higher education administration, Johanna specializes in student success and alumni engagement. In her role, she oversees programming and initiatives designed to cultivate meaningful connections among The Broad Center and SOM alumni with aligned interests in public education. Johanna holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and an MBA in Business Administration from the University of Hartford.
Assistant Director of Program Operations
As Assistant Director of Program Operations, Emma supports the Master's in Public Education Management and the Fellowship for Public Education Leadership programs. Emma helps foster participant growth by ensuring excellence in program experience and cultivating learning-focused spaces. Prior to joining The Broad Center team, Emma worked in the Yale SOM Dean's Office and as a pre-kindergarten teacher in New Haven. Emma holds a BA from Swarthmore College and an MA in Greek Literature from the University of California, Berkeley.
