An integral part of the Office of Inclusion and Diversity is to empower SOM’s community to uphold inclusionary practices that are intentional and impactful. Our approach strengthens individual capacity and community bonds to advance our mission through awareness, reflection, and actions.

Our Approach

Awareness

Embracing diversity and increasing inclusion start with self-awareness. The OID offers members of the community opportunities to become more mindful about why and how they make decisions. We believe in meeting people where they are. Awareness programming includes Conversations that Matter series, sessions that provide space to engage in critical dialogue around timely and relevant issues around diversity equity and inclusion.

Reflection

Being open to change means learning about personal biases and how to mitigate them. Our programming offers members practical tools for feedback and self-observation.  Our DEI Labs series offers interactive workshops that provide individuals the space to go deeper on key themes, with an emphasis on internal reflection and commitments.

Action

Inclusion requires active, intentional, and ongoing efforts to promote the full participation of every member of the community. OID programming includes training focused on providing frameworks on inclusive leadership skills, and our resources support those looking to be more effective allies.

Opportunities

The Office of Inclusion and Diversity team offers the Yale SOM community different opportunities for awareness, reflection, and action as they progress in their journey to become a more inclusive member.

Conversations That Matter

Sessions that provide space to engage in critical dialogue around timely and relevant issues around diversity equity and inclusion. The format of these sessions will vary depending on the topic, from workshops to listening sessions. Some sessions will be led by external experts, Yale professors, and the OID staff.

DEI Labs

Interactive workshop series designed to create deeper understanding of different themes related to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. These labs provide actionable strategies for participants looking to be a more engaged and inclusive members of the community.

Student Leadership Training

Now more than ever, student leaders must be prepared to focus on belonging, engagement, and community building. To ensure that student leaders have the tools necessary to be successful leaders at SOM, we bring external experts to lead specific training and workshops focused on leadership skills.

Curriculum specific DEI workshops

OID has partnered with SOM faculty members to bring DEl experts and facilitators to host workshops that dive deeper into concepts discussed during courses. Some themes and topics discussed in class need unpacking, and these workshops offer just that.

Coffee with Intention

Weekly opportunities for Yale SOM's community members to ask questions and discuss topics or learnings in a more intimate setting. Have a one on one conversation with someone from the OID team about DEl-related topics over coffee.
