Yale SOM and the Center for Inclusive Growth Pilot Workshop Series for Small Businesses
This spring, New Haven business owners participated in pricing and negotiation training led by SOM faculty.
Yale SOM partnered with New Haven’s Center for Inclusive Growth to host two professional workshops for small business owners in March, drawing participants from across the Greater New Haven area.
The school offered the workshops to support Buy New Haven, an initiative launched by the center late last year to encourage local purchasing. The initiative connects the city’s anchor institutions with small businesses, provides resources to help them grow and compete for larger contracts, and encourages larger organizations to procure materials and services through local enterprises.
According to the leaders at the center, the workshops were created in response to feedback from small business owners.
Yale SOM faculty led both workshops. Shane Frederick, the Richard Ely Professor of Marketing, taught a session called Framing Value and Price. Daylian Cain, a senior lecturer in negotiations, leadership, and ethics, led a workshop called How to Collaborate (Even with Difficult People).
“We see New Haven as an essential part of our community, and we were excited to collaborate with the Center for Inclusive Growth on this initiative,” said Kavitha Bindra, assistant dean and executive director of executive education at SOM, in a press release. “Our goal is to make our expertise accessible and useful, and to build ongoing partnerships that support the growth of local businesses and entrepreneurs.”
The Center for Inclusive Growth, created in 2021, is a partnership between the City of New Haven and Yale University that develops and implements strategies to ensure that economic growth in the city benefits all residents.
