SOM Team Wins National Business-School Soccer Tournament
Hosted by the McCombs School of Business at UT Austin, the Texas Winter Classic MBA Invitational Soccer Tournament invites teams from top business programs to compete for the title.
SOM United, the school’s soccer club, won the country’s largest business-school soccer tournament in February. Forty teams from 18 different schools competed at the 28th annual Texas Winter Classic, including two teams fielded by SOM United.
The club, which includes students from across the school’s degree programs and their partners, competes against other schools at Yale and other business programs. Some players have grown up with soccer or competed at the collegiate level, while others join SOM United as newcomers to the sport.
After advancing through multiple rounds, SOM United secured the title with a 4-1 win over the Wharton School of Business. This marked the soccer club’s first championship at the tournament.
“It was an incredible weekend getting to play and spend time with the entire group, which is what these events are all about,” said club leaders Drew Richard ’26 and Owen Samson ’26. “We are just so proud of how the team performed and what we accomplished, beating several programs significantly bigger than ours to win the title.”
