Prof. Deborah Small Becomes Director of Graduate Studies at Yale SOM
Small succeeds Prof. Matthew Spiegel, who led the doctoral program for 11 years.
Deborah Small, the Adrian C. Israel Professor of Marketing, began her term as director of graduate studies on July 1. Small succeeds Matthew Spiegel, professor of finance, who had served in the role since 2015.
Yale SOM offers doctoral programs in accounting, finance, marketing, operations, and organizations and management. The director of graduate studies oversees PhD admissions, doctoral student program policy, and student progress and support. They also serve as the main liaison between doctoral students and the school’s administration and faculty.
“For the last 11 years, Matthew Spiegel led our PhD program with efficiency, discretion, and genuine care for our students, and the program has thrived under his leadership,” said Katja Seim, deputy dean for faculty and the Sharon Oster Professor of Economics and Management. “We are deeply grateful for all he has built. I’m delighted that Deborah Small has agreed to serve as our next director of graduate studies. With her deep commitment to training new scholars, I know the program is in excellent hands.”
Small joined the Yale SOM faculty in 2022. Her research focuses on how individuals make decisions that affect their own and others’ welfare, and what their choices signal to themselves and others about their moral character.
