Korean Globalization, Kimchi, and Karaoke: Global Network Week in Seoul
Axel Svensson ’25, a student in the GBS program, reflects on a Yale SOM program that sends students to international business schools for immersive experiences during spring break.
Participating in the Global Network Week (GNW) at Seoul National University (SNU) in South Korea was undoubtedly one of the highlights of my studies at SOM. GNW is a unique initiative that sends business students from around the world to different schools for an intensive exchange week. Let me take you on a tour of my Seoul-soaked, kimchi-flavored GNW adventure.
The academic experience at SNU
Our theme, “Globalization and its Challenges: The Case of South Korea,” served as a launchpad for a profound exploration of South Korea’s vibrant economy and rich cultural landscape. During the structured academic sessions at SNU, we immersed ourselves in a comprehensive learning experience covering Korean culture, business practices, and economic strategies. With a collaborative business project that asked us to operate a hypothetical business in South Korea, we directly applied learnings and exchanged diverse perspectives with peers from around the globe. Complementing these sessions, we participated in enriching cultural activities like a traditional Korean cooking class and an enlightening company visit to the investment manager Mirae Asset, where we delved into South Korea’s venture capital scene.
Seoul searching
Outside of our scheduled activities, we had plenty of opportunities to explore the city’s dynamic neighborhoods and savor delectable food. Throughout the program and with help from locals, we explored the most exciting corners of the city, covering vibrant neighborhoods like Itaewon, Hongdae, and Gangnam; national parks like Bukhansan; and a myriad of temples. Additionally, we were offered an tour of the Korean Demilitarized Zone at the North Korean border, where I could peek into one of the world’s most unique and obscure economies through my binoculars.
Friends, food, and karaoke
I really appreciated that GNW provided opportunities to meet new people. Bringing together people from all over the world and meeting locals created a unique way to get to know people and the city. Beyond classes, we could explore the city, its delicious food and sweet drinks, and get to know the fast-paced life of Koreans. We teamed up with global and local students to indulge in mouthwatering Korean barbecue and bibimbap, taste soju, and sing “Gangnam Style” together in a karaoke bar (demonstrating a very high level of passion and a very low level of vocal talent). Sharing this intensive experience with peers from diverse cultures and locals led to meaningful connections, friendships and memories for life.
Do it!
Personally, I think that GNW stands out as an exceptional way to deeply engage with a new culture, business environment, and city—something far beyond the reach of a typical tourist experience. Blending rigor and real-world immersion, the program offered genuine insights into history, society, and the global trends that manifest uniquely in South Korea.
Since I did my GNW in the spring, I enjoyed the additional bonus of exploring on my own during the second week of spring break. During this week, I traveled with friends to Japan to continue the adventure and explore fascinating cultural landscapes in Osaka and Kyoto.
My GNW experience at Seoul National University was deeply enriching and incredibly enjoyable. It perfectly captured the essence of my program’s—and SOM’s—commitment to global perspectives and learning. I would highly recommend a GNW to explore any part of the world that interests you. It’s a perfect blend of academics, culture, and karaoke!
