Position Focus:
The Senior Associate Director of Media Relations and Faculty Research at the Yale School of Management (SOM) will generate media placements for faculty and their research, collaborating directly with individual faculty, and aligning work with strategic objectives of the school. This position reports to the Managing Director of Marketing and Public Relations.
Essential Duties:
- Promote positive awareness of Yale SOM as a multi-faceted, top-tier institution of management education. Build relationships with external media sources and creatively pitch media opportunities and coverage for the school. Generate inquiries from national and international news media, student media, the University community and the general public.
- Closely collaborate with the school's faculty experts, meeting with them regularly to discuss their research interests, and upcoming publications. Read their research, books, and working papers and pitch their scholarship in a way that trade and mainstream media will understand. Uncover opportunities to link Yale SOM faculty into national/international media conversations.
- Working closely with the Managing Director of Marketing and Public Relations, coordinate external public relations agencies to build the global reputation of the school and its faculty experts; develop and maintain regular contact with media representatives in multiple disciplines to pitch for faculty interviews.
- Develop special media relations projects in close concert with SOM centers, conferences, and other special initiatives, such as The Broad Center (TBC) and the Swensen Asset Management Institute.
- Work collaboratively with the editorial team to contribute faculty research to Yale Insights, our online thought leadership magazine. Pitch faculty for research writeups or “Three Questions” for rapid-response news features based on their relevant research when business topics are trending in the news.
- Coordinate across content development teams and other stakeholders to create ‘social first’ angles for content marketing; produce content for both external and internal channels; write copy and social media posts; provide insights into social audiences, influencers, and topical online conversation that are complimentary to the school’s identity and faculty research.
- Represent the department in presentations to and meetings with CDO, faculty support, AASL, and students on best practices in overall communications and media relations.
- Enhance the overall quality of media relations for key stakeholders by preparing them for media interviews.
- Track media mentions of Yale SOM, students, alumni, and faculty with third-party clipping tools (such as Meltwater) to prepare reports or regular digests of media highlights.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications or related field and five years of experience in public relations, journalism, television, corporate communications or agency work or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated experience in developing communications for a range of media and working with creative professionals in design, photography or video.
Required Skills & Abilities:
- Must enjoy and be adept at reading complicated research materials (i.e., academic books, journal articles, working papers, research outlines) and translating it into layman's terms; into a vernacular that will be understood by trade and popular press throughout the world.
- Well-developed project management, team coordination, organizational skills, writing skills, and social media fluency.
- Thorough knowledge of various media such as newspaper, radio, print, magazine, online and broadcast channels.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills.
