Celebrated restaurateur Danny Meyer recently shared his views on today’s changing hospitality industry with students at the Yale School of Management.
Meyer discussed his career trajectory and the evolving hospitality field. “If you’re an entrepreneur and you want to take something you love, share it with other people, build jobs and transform communities, I don’t know of a better way to do it,” he said.
The CEO of the Union Square Hospitality Group, Meyer spoke at SOM on April 7 as part of the Gordon Grand Fellowship Lecture series. The series brings prominent business leaders to campus to lecture, meet informally with faculty and students, and participate in classes.
Since opening the Union Square Cafe in New York City in 1985, Meyer has launched 28 more restaurants, as well as the Shake Shack chain of burger stands, which in the course of just a few years has become a national and international brand.
Meyer told students that the hospitality industry offers unique opportunities. “We’re in an age when food is one of the few things that your iPhone cannot produce,” he said. “Many, many more really smart, engaged, entrepreneurial people have been attracted to our industry.”
