Richard Berner, director of the U.S. Office of Financial Research (OFR), talks with Andrew Metrick, Michael H. Jordan Professor of Finance and Management, deputy dean, and director of the Yale Program on Financial Stability, about the role the OFR is expected to play in providing analysis of threats to financial stability. The office, which was created as part of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, is charged with collecting the kind of data on the financial system that might prevent future crises. To that end, the OFR has approached firms about acquiring key data sets that should allow the government to finally begin to paint a portrait of the vast financial system and plumb it for vulnerabilities. Before joining OFR, Berner was chief U.S. economist at Morgan Stanley.
