It Must Be August

It’s another sweltering Sunday afternoon here in New York City, and it has dawned on me that summer is drawing to a close. I spent this past Saturday moving into a sunny downtown New Haven apartment near Old Campus and will soon begin my final year at Yale SOM. I thought I’d share a few observations about my internship, summer in general, and a few things that we all have to look forward to. I interned at HBO this summer in Emerging Technology R&D focusing on the implications of television hardware trends, emerging software platforms, and changing consumer behaviors on the industry. I worked at a technology company focused on media before school, and it was fascinating to see things from the reverse perspective of a media company placing a greater emphasis on technology. Thanks to Yale SOM, I was prepared to hit the ground running. I spent my post-undergrad years in San Francisco, and living in New York was a blast! Highlights included Thursday night cocktails at the Yale Club, finding the best Japanese noodles in the city (Cocoron in LES), and catching a fantastic revival of Cole Porter’s (YC 1913) Anything Goes on Broadway. Over a quarter of my class was in New York for the summer, and not a week went by where I didn’t see at least a handful of SOMers out and about. But yes, autumn will be here soon enough. The Class of 2013 is starting to move in and will start orientation this Wednesday. I'll be paying a visit to my family in Texas before returning to New Haven to begin classes on August 31st. I could devote several posts to what I’m looking forward to, but here are three highlights:

  • Club Fair, September 1st. By the time the 2012s get back, the Class of 2013 will think they have the school’s dynamics down. That will change when the 2012s arrive. The club fair will introduce the first years to a whole other aspect of the school as they learn about the diverse professional, cultural, and recreational clubs on campus. I’ll be representing SOM Crew. Come say Hi.

  • Fall Break, October 17-21st. 2013s will complete an intense week of team building and leadership development. I plan to complete an intense week of “cultural enrichment” in Barcelona visiting classmates studying abroad.

  • THE GAME, November 19th. Yalies of all ages and affiliations come together to cheer on the Bulldogs against Harvard in one of the most historic rivalries in college athletics. The game is played at home this year, and I’ve already made a wager with an HBSer and fellow HBO intern that Yale will be victorious after last year’s unfortunate loss up in Cambridge. Most importantly: There Will Be Tailgating.
