Position Focus: 

As a member of the Business Operations team, carries out fiscal and administrative duties to support the mission and operation of Business Operations. Working collaboratively with the Lead Administrator and the Director in SOM Business Operations and with considerable latitude for exercising discretion and independent judgment, serve as the primary liaison and analyst for the Deputy Dean’s Office on all financial matters related to faculty, including, faculty salaries, grant management, budgeting, reporting, and planning for all SOM faculty accounts in compliance with Yale University and funding agency guidelines.                                                          

Essential Duties: 

  1. Financial Analysis and Reporting: Prepare monthly financial reports for all SOM faculty accounts—research & teaching, sponsored research grants, and research centers. Present financial information and recommendations through data analysis. Identify funding issues, develop appropriate solutions, and execute any necessary changes. Manage database of faculty internal funding allocation commitments. Review and approve reports for administrative actions including pre-award costs, financial status reports, and no-cost extensions. Develop and provide timely and accurate reports in response to ad hoc requests from department leadership.
  2. Faculty Salary Budgeting, Monitoring, and Planning: Manage monthly faculty salary monitoring process (including regular, summer, and extra compensation) for a cohort of approximately 100 SOM faculty. Develop long range projections / variance analyses. Manage faculty budgeting in the Yale Budget Tool Labor Plan (YBT LP). Oversee the effort reporting process, including cost sharing.
  3. Collaborative Finance Partner & Lead: Provides a high-level of service that maintains strong working relationships by interacting with faculty and internal and external contacts, such as Faculty Research Management Services (FRMS), SOM Development, the Office of Sponsored Projects and granting agencies by assisting faculty during the proposal process and managing sponsored research funding.  Manage financial relationships with Yale SOM programs and centers, including the Yale Center for Customer Insights, The Broad Center, the International Center for Finance, and Yale Program for Social Enterprise. 
  4. Compliance and Risk Management: Responsible for providing appropriate guidance on compliance matters during management of faculty accounts (sponsored and internally funded) and collaborates with account holders to maintain such compliance. Where applicable, review, interpret and effectively apply sponsor and University policies on a variety of topics including cost allowability, budget management, effort certification and other award management activities to ensure compliance with sponsoring agency requirements and University policies and procedures.
  5. Represent Business Operations on the SOM faculty research resources committee. Manage procurement / licensing agreements for faculty research databases.
  6. Share SOM’s best practices and provide financial guidance and training.
  7. Work closely with other SOM and central unit staff to maximize services to the School.
  8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business, Economics or Finance and four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated application of financial, accounting, and economic concepts.
