The Broad Center at the Yale School of Management (TBC at SOM) fosters the ideas, policies, and leadership to help all students in K-12 public schools – particularly those from underserved communities – to learn and thrive. We work in three core ways to cultivate U.S. public school systems that drive excellence and equity:

Preparing and supporting transformational leaders from diverse backgrounds;

Developing essential research on effective public education systems and school system leadership, focusing on the dynamics of school systems as complex organizations; and

Informing education policy conversations to advance decisions that support great leaders and the students, families, and communities they serve.
Our work is bolstered and enriched by the Broad network, a nationwide community of nearly 900 dedicated and diverse leaders who are alumni of Broad programs.
Leadership Development
Developing and supporting transformational education leaders in Urban K-12 public Schools
TBC offers two programs for extraordinary education leaders working in K-12 urban districts, charter organizations, and state education agencies in the United States. The Master’s Degree in Public Education Management, is a 14-month, tuition-free, cohort-based program for education leaders looking to hone their skills and increase their impact in the school districts and systems where they work. The Fellowship for Public Education Leadership is a non-degree, tuition-free, executive leadership program for senior-level public education leaders from across the country working in some of the nation’s most critical school districts.
Research
Generating Knowledge about Effective School System Leadership
TBC at Yale SOM will convene scholars including Yale faculty, practitioners and other experts for colloquia, conferences, and knowledge-sharing about the latest research on public education. Through these gatherings, TBC at Yale SOM will connect research and data with actionable improvements for school system leaders. To support these efforts, we are planning to build the world’s premier data source about public school leadership that will inform practice and public policy.
Policy
Informing and Elevating the Policy Debate
We aim to shape conversations on public policy through conferences, events, and communication. TBC at Yale SOM leverages the amazing Broad Center network and its alumni to identify best practices and to share key learnings about the future of public education in the United States. By connecting practitioner and faculty expertise we will develop and broadly share evidence-based, systemic improvements.
Sustained Leadership
Cultivating a network of education leaders via The Broad Network
TBC at SOM participants join a diverse network of alumni working in school districts, public charter organizations, state education agencies, and nonprofit organizations to drive equity and excellence for students, families and communities. The cohort experience is central to what it means to be a Broad alumni, and the network continues to come together and grow as a community after graduation.
