The Yale School of Management hosted its 39th Commencement on May 23, awarding diplomas to 415 members of the Class of 2016 during a ceremony in the courtyard of Edward P. Evans Hall.
The graduating class included 301 students in the MBA program, 63 in the Master of Advanced Management (MAM) program, and 51 in the MBA for Executives (EMBA) program.
Yale SOM Dean Edward A. Snyder praised the class’ diversity and ability.
“You emerge from the crucible with greater capability, ready to join Yale SOM’s purposeful alumni in all sectors and in all regions,” Snyder said.
“Honor competition, honor cooperation, honor our school to signal your role as teachers and learners and leaders for business and society,” he added. “Your class, by all accounts, is the most together class, one of the most cooperative classes in the history of the school… Congratulations to the Class of 2016. We look forward to welcoming you back often.”
One student speaker from each degree program, selected by his or her classmates, delivered remarks during the ceremony.
MAM class speaker Diego Xavier Arosemena Navas ’16 thanked his classmates for their friendship.
“It has been a pleasure and a privilege for our cohort to interact with student from across the globe and from all walks of life,” he said. “We have come to know one another and to learn from one another.”
He encouraged his classmates to use the tools they’ve mastered to improve society. “We have a duty to walk into the world and try to make a positive change, to see justice and fairness for all,” he said. “I must encourage all of you to work tirelessly every day, so we can leave this world in better shape than we found it.”
MBA class speaker Jennifer Elizabeth Graham ’16 hailed Yale SOM’s close and supportive community, and the rigor of the education her class received.
“We have learned to ask questions and to challenge their answers, to sometimes step up and sometimes step back, and to communicate with classmates from 46 countries,” she said. “Most important, we have learned to think and talk about complex problems in business and society.”
MBA for Executives class speaker Jillian Joan Jweinat ’16 thanked the family and friends who have supported her and her classmates.
“It truly has been an honor to be part of this class for the last 22 months,” she said. “The graduates of this class were born in 14 countries and traveled to New Haven from 15 states and the country of Brazil… In these two short years, we have engaged in a daring act of self-creation and invested in the person we want to become… This experience has united us in a way that little else can.”
