Position Focus:

The Yale School of Management (SOM) Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) team cultivates and strengthens alumni relationships with SOM through messaging and engagement opportunities such as fundraising, volunteering, and events. Reporting to the SOM Managing Director of Alumni Relations with a secondary report to the Senior Director of Campaign and Advancement Strategy, the Director of Communications and Marketing will provide leadership to support the school’s vision and mission by designing and implementing an integrated and analytics-driven marketing and communications strategy to promote SOM, its fundraising priorities, programs, and affiliated alumni groups to worldwide SOM community and campus partners. While adhering to SOM messaging and communications strategy, the Director will focus on content strategy, segmentation, and messaging for a multi-layered audience, and leverage data and relationships to inspire philanthropic support from and engage members of the alumni community.  

Essential Duties:

  1. Lead communications and marketing strategy and implementation of all DAR materials and collateral, with clear understanding of and catering to differing needs in terms of style, tone, and approach for each team within DAR. Partner with key stakeholders and bring in collaborators at the appropriate time.
  2. Collaborate with SOM Communications, Dean’s Office, and other campus communicators to leverage their expertise and to promote SOM messages and content of interest to alumni and friends.
  3. Provide guidance and best practices to SOM staff on alumni-focused communications, including email marketing, social media, analytics, and style guides. Collaborate and coordinate with Yale Alumni Association (YAA) and other graduate and professional school alumni relations colleagues regarding all-alumni communications.
  4. Manage SOM DAR’s relationships with internal and external vendors for graphic design, specialized content, writing, and video. Develop roster of preferred vendors and resources.
  5. Represent Development and Alumni Relations office to other school and university departments especially concerning information, communication technology, and communications issues; serve on appropriate committees.
  6. Collaborate with SOM Communications to develop school-wide communications strategies and initiatives by representing the DAR perspective. Bring deep knowledge of and experience with alumni audiences to planning and execution of major campaigns. Ensure that communications from DAR and other units are coordinated and aligned.
  7. Develop framework and brand voice for SOM DAR strategic communications across multiple platforms (print, web, social, video, third-party software solutions) consistent with SOM’s messaging. Identify new and innovative content delivery opportunities; create strategies to maximize effectiveness of existing channels.
  8. Oversee the creation of content and manage outreach plans for signature programs, such as Reunions, chapter and class events, and alumni online services, using multiple formats (email, article, social media, newsletter, print) and segmentation strategies. Manage key communications for SOM senior leadership to alumni, including content development and delivery methodology. Solicit and curate alumni-written content, package for distribution through SOM channels.
  9. Manage all alumni website related issues and enhancements, including management of enhancements, ensuring the end product allows for an individually tailored online experience for alumni.
  10. Oversee the alumni engagement platform, SOM Connect, a digital hub for the alumni directory, events, as well as regional, class, and affinity/shared interest groups. Set engagement and activity goals, oversee marketing strategies, and content creation. Determine team roles and responsibilities to manage groups, create and manage content, moderate user activity, and troubleshoot/fix bugs.  
  11. Shepherd visual identity guidelines for SOM volunteer-led alumni organizations, such as regional SOM chapters and shared interest groups.
  12. Coordinate and build cohesive email and social media marketing program and strategy for alumni relations and development, offering tailored services for different audiences, working with key volunteer leaders to institute effective outreach strategies for their audiences, including chapter leaders, class secretaries and class agents.
  13. Develop a nuanced social media strategy to expand the reach of alumni-related online content to key audiences including but not limited to alumni, donors, prospects, students, prospective students, employers, potential employers the broader Yale community and the GNAM community.
  14. In concert with SOM Communications, produce and curate Yale SOM Exchange, a webinar series to promote professional development and lifelong learning for SOM alumni.
  15. In concert with SOM Career Development Office (CDO), produce and market monthly career webinars for SOM alumni curated by CDO staff.
  16. In concert with SOM Communications, oversee production of annual IMPACT publication and annual honor roll. Manage timely compilation and communication of honor role to alumni on an annual basis prior to calendar year-end.
  17. Oversee Yale SOM 5th decade history project, including stewardship of project donors, creating historian/video producer job description, hiring, and managing historian/video producer, and driving overall direction of the 50th anniversary video interviews, documentary, and book preparation.
  18. Participate in and staff SOM AR activities such as reunions and chapter events, including evenings and weekends as necessary.
  19. Supervise production of all printed/designed materials, including reunion and special event materials and alumni fund and reunion giving development solicitations.
  20. Direct, manage, coach, and develop Alumni Communications and Marketing team members, providing them with supervision, guidance, and mentoring in goal setting, performance management, skill building, and professional growth.
  21. Oversee the creation of metrics as well as visualizations and analyze community data for SOM alumni marketing activities. In consultation with senior management, develop goals based on these metrics and strategies to meet them; monitor and report on outcomes.
  22. Rely on a wide range of data sources and machine learning tools, identify actionable communications and marketing opportunities, serving as a key contributor to data-driven decision-making on the team’s behalf.

Required Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications or related field and five years of experience in public relations, journalism, television, corporate communications or agency work or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated experience in developing communications for a range of media and working with creative professionals in design, photography, or video.

  4. Ability to prioritize and meet multiple, competing responsibilities. Demonstrated success is developing and managing multiple projects and deadlines from conception to completion with exceptional attention to detail.
  5. Ability to work successfully and creatively in a fast-paced and changing environment while maintaining composure and a sense of humor. Willingness to learn new tools and stay abreast of marketing analytics trends.

Preferred:

Experience in development and alumni relations within higher education, nonprofits, alumni relations, communications, marketing, public relations, or related field. Proven competencies in communications and marketing strategy, branding and positioning, integrated marketing communications, digital marketing, content marketing, workflows, and reporting/analytics to optimize communications and marketing programs over time. Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite, Drupal or other web CMS, email messaging systems, and CRM platforms. Experience using social media for business applications.
