Position Focus:
The Communications Writer is responsible for promoting public recognition, awareness, and support of the Yale School of Management (SOM) by conceiving and writing engaging profiles, news articles, and feature stories for the various digital and print publications of SOM. The Communications Writer collaborates closely with Communications colleagues, students, faculty, and a variety of school departments, programs, and centers to identify, plan, and produce stories that will serve to promote public recognition, awareness, and support of the school. This position reports to the Director of Editorial and Design.
Essential Duties:
- Help plan, create, and execute external written communications that capture the SOM’s distinctive approach and community and promote the school’s priority messages.
- Write news and feature stories about student activities, faculty projects, and alumni. Conceive, pitch, and execute compact new formats for written materials that effectively and efficiently highlight the school’s message and activities on the web and in social media.
- Write profiles of students, faculty members, alumni, and other members of the community, telling their stories in ways that incorporate the school’s critical messages, themes, and other priorities.
- Write engaging articles about events at the school. Attend school events and interview students, faculty, and staff to write about them.
- Regularly meet with and communicate with students, staff, and faculty members to identify stories that demonstrate the distinctiveness of the school’s mission, community, and approach. Pitch ideas for stories that help promote the school to a variety of audiences, including prospective students, alumni, and the public at large.
- Plan, prioritize, and organize workload to meet deadlines and provide material for regular email newsletters and other outlets.
- As requested, write high-quality informative copy for print brochures and online media.
- Work closely and collaboratively with the rest of the communications department, including the editorial, video, marketing, and social media teams, to ensure that all communications consistently promote the school’s message and advance its strategic initiatives.
Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism or related field. Four years of editorial experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skills & Abilities:
- Excellent writing, editorial, and communication skills. Candidates are asked to provide samples of journalistic narrative writing, such as news articles, feature stories, profiles, or blog posts, with their résumé.
- Ability to meet production schedules and tight writing deadlines.
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, self-starter, and team player. Ability to represent the school well in working collegially with all members of staff, faculty, outside vendors, university colleagues, alumni, and students.
- Well-organized and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to absorb feedback and make revisions with speed and professionalism.
- Eagerness and ability to learn about new topics and incorporate that knowledge into written material.
- Ability to work within the university's publications policies and procedures.
- Familiarity with established web communications technologies and with developing technologies, such as blogs, podcasts, and video streaming.
- Ability to develop new, relevant technology skills when required.
- Proficient with PC and/or Macintosh operating systems and standard office productivity software.

- Ability to work in a fast-paced and changing environment.
Preferred:
Familiarity with business, finance, economics, and/or social science terminology. Demonstrated ability to write about meetings, speaker events, and other live events under tight deadlines. Demonstrated interviewing skills.
