TBC at Yale SOM Launch Newsletter #7

The following message was sent to the 800+ network members of The Broad Center.

A Note From Hanseul Kang

Dear fellow Broad Center alumni,

I am thrilled to be joining the Yale School of Management later this fall as the inaugural assistant dean and Executive Director of The Broad Center at Yale SOM. Although I am still focused on finishing out my work in DC for the next several weeks, I wanted to be sure to share with you how much I am looking forward to connecting with all of you in the coming weeks and months as I take on this new role.

The Broad Center’s work has been a deeply important part of my own leadership journey—from my experience as a resident in the TBR 2012-14 cohort, to onboarding support and coaching as I transitioned into a new role in 2015 as DC’s state superintendent of education, to the joy of reconnecting with old friends and meeting new colleagues while attending the Forum. The Broad Center helped me find my leadership voice. The first time I ever shared my story as a formerly undocumented immigrant was when I was tapped to share my leadership story at my very first TBR session, and finding the courage to share my background and feeling the support of my cohort in that moment was the start of what led me to publicly share my experience in a Washington Post op-ed in 2017.

I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead for our network, and for what The Broad Center at Yale SOM will be. I believe in the potential of leadership development, impactful research and policy engagement to help school systems become engines of excellence and equity for all of the students and families they serve. I look forward to being in touch once I am fully on board in November, but in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the members of the launch team with any questions.

All the best,
Hanseul
