Introducing the Newest Student Analyst Reports from Yale SOM’s Security Analysis & Valuation Course

As a teaching assistant in Yale SOM’s unique Security Analysis & Valuation class, I invite you to explore the original work of students taking part in our spring 2016 class.

The course equips students with the tools and practice needed to provide sound investment recommendations for industries and firms. During the semester, students prepare and present professional level analyst reports on industries and publicly traded firms, with a recommendation on their medium term (6-12 months) outlook. Each team prepares one industry report and three company reports, and presents them to the class for critique, comment, and assessment of the report’s recommendation. This simulates the work-environment of professional security analysts, and provides vital training that allows our students interested in this field of work to compete at the highest levels. After each presentation, members of the class vote as members of an investment committee to either endorse or reject the recommendation of the report.

To make the class a global experience, students from EGADE Business School in Monterrey, Mexico and UCD Smurfit Graduate Business School in Dublin, Ireland (both members of the Global Network for Advanced Management) participate with Yale School of Management students. Classes at the three schools are conducted through a live video link using Yale SOM’s IT capabilities.  Students present, observe, critique and learn together under supervision of two Yale professors, Professors Matthew Spiegel and Shyam Sunder. The diverse perspectives of the students drawn from a dozen countries analyzing and valuing businesses from various continents helps them gain unique capabilities, networking, and international exposure.

Our public website, analystreports.som.yale.edu, showcases our students’ work. I encourage you to visit the site, download the reports, and get a first-hand look at the quality of our students’ reports. Please be sure to read the disclaimer at the end of each report.
