Learning How to Change the World

I was often asked during my MBA: “What made you decide to go for an MBA?” and my answer never changed: “I want to change the world, and I think the MBA can help.”

Many people dismissed my answer as a joke, or perhaps lacking truth, but I have never been more serious about anything.  I was pleasantly surprised when I came here to the MAM program and spoke with my classmates and found out that the majority shared my sentiment. We want to change the world and make a difference.

I cannot imagine a better start than being given the opportunity to connect to prominent figures such as Mr. Bob Diamond, the former CEO of Barclays, who spoke with us as part of our Colloquium in Advanced Management. Immediately after our discussion with him, I felt so inspired by his recent interest in the African financial markets that I wrote him a thank you note.

In this letter I mentioned that his talk could have not been timelier considering the recent interest Yale has in Africa. Additionally, he mentioned that the existing opportunities in Africa are massive and that with the underdeveloped there are many opportunities for investment and growth.  He reminded us that innovation does not always need to be something new, something never done before, but can also take place through the matching of goods and services to new places.  He pointed out that there is no scarcity of resources when it comes to doing business in Africa, just scarcity of intent.

So I wonder, with all of us who seek to make a difference, can Africa also be the land of opportunity?
