A Critical Difference
The Yale SOM Alumni Fund provides annual support for the school’s programming and operational needs. It is a critical source of funds for new initiatives and priority programs each year.
Over its history, Yale SOM has received tremendous support from its alumni in many forms, including through donations to the Alumni Fund. More than 90% of alumni have made at least one annual gift to the school. Yale SOM regularly ranks highest among Yale schools for its participation rate in annual giving. It also achieves one of the highest rates among all top business schools. For example, in fiscal year 2013, which ended in June of last year, alumni donated $1.59 million to the fund, and 41.7% of alumni participated.
This year, SOM is aiming to set a new high mark for total amount raised, $1.7 million, and to achieve 50% alumni participation within a single year, a figure not seen in the past 25 years, during which time the alumni body has expanded greatly in size. These are ambitious targets, but the Alumni Fund is on track to reach both goals. To bolster the effort, Fred Frank YC '54, a member of the Yale SOM Board of Advisors, has committed to donate $200 for each gift from a Yale SOM graduate who didn't participate in the fund last year.
“Our alumni participation in giving and in service speaks volumes about how invested our alumni are in the life of the school,” said Joel Getz, Senior Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations. “Last year, more than 1,350 alumni volunteered for SOM in some way. Alongside this spirit of service, setting a new benchmark for giving will reflect the fact that alumni continue to play such a big part in the success of the school.”
What Your Gift Accomplishes
The Yale SOM Alumni Fund has an immediate impact on the school's highest priorities. Unrestricted giving drives innovation and new initiatives and enables a more flexible funding model.
In the past year, the Alumni Fund has helped the school:
- Send students across the country and the world on job treks and support Global Network Weeks
- Prepare for a substantial build-out of the school's Entrepreneurship Program
- Fund merit-based scholarships to attract the best and brightest students to Yale SOM.
Unrestricted giving is a small but critical portion of the Yale SOM annual budget. In the previous fiscal year, only 6% of donor funds were unrestricted, but those funds made an outsize difference across many programs and initiatives.
The Yale SOM Alumni Fund brings the community together in supporting the growth of the School with flexible, current-use funding. Yale SOM graduates lead the university in Alumni Fund participation, and this unity and collaboration reflects the unified and collaborative culture of the school.
Leadership Annual Giving
Yale SOM is delighted to recognize donors who contribute to the Alumni Fund at leadership levels as outlined below. Membership in these giving societies includes various benefits including recognition in the donor honor roll and invitations to special events. Support of the Alumni Fund at these levels has a significant impact on the continued excellence of the academic environment at the school.
