Yale Consortium members teach local high school students about business

On Friday, September 7, 2012 the Yale Consortium for Graduate Studies in Management partnered with my nonprofit, Boys Speak Out, Inc. (www.boysspeakout.org) to host 17 high school students from Metropolitan Business Academy. During the day the students had the opportunity to have a tour of the business school campus, hear a keynote presentation from admissions and student services officer Chris Grey, and take part in a lecture regarding a business case and then a case competition/discussion presentation.I have organized these programs all over the country for 5 years now, but the energy around this program felt different; it was really powerful. The Yale students and the high school students alike walked out of this event better people because of what they shared with one another. We promoted the BSO, Inc. 3 keys to success: hard work, dedication and surrounding one’s self with positive people. Listening to 16 and 17 year olds discuss fixed and variable costs as well as seasonal sales was truly a wonderful sight to see. I am thankful to be at a place that embraces this type of work and encourages its students to help build its local community. One of the reasons Yale SOM is so great is because it is an environment that can help an individual grow in various dimensions of his/her life. For me, a lawyer turned consultant by trade, I am going to spend this school year taking some classes that will help me create a strategic plan for my nonprofit organization and help me perform better as a leader of a nonprofit organization. I am very excited to have so many intelligent and compassionate people around me from whom I can learn so much.
