SOM Winter In(formal): Version 2.0
The chance of precipitation was 100 percent. Wind speeds started at 13 miles per hour and reached up to 22 miles per hour. By 9:05 p.m., the temperature had already hit a low of 37 degrees.
Mother nature, however, could not deter the students of SOM from braving the elements to celebrate our 2013 winter formal, “Winter Lights,” on Friday night. By taxi, by car and even by foot, we descended upon the New Haven Lawn Club, where, per the invitation, “formal attire (was) preferred” and “dancing (was) required.”
Nor could the frightful conditions outside detract from the merriment inside during the second annual winter in(formal) pre-formal party, a tradition a few of my friends and I started last year. Never one to hold back on an opportunity to laugh when it presents itself, I invited my esteemed guests to pair their formal attire with at least one wacky prop. “Friends of the stodgy persuasion need not apply,” I wrote.
Needless to say, they did not disappoint. With wigs, masks and even a Yale banner, they made for a photogenic crowd indeed. And, for the first time since fall semester started in August, the reality of our impending graduation hit me: I thought to myself, “Wow, I’m really going to miss these guys next year."
