While I’ve gained a much richer perspective on business at Yale SOM, what’s even more important to me is the network that I’ve built.

Yale SOM’s mission is educating leaders for business and society. I’ve been exposed to issues like impact investing; I’ve met people working in sustainability or clean energy, and I’ve learned a lot from those diverse perspectives. Courses like State and Society and guest speakers who talk about how organizations approach corporate social responsibility have all prepared me to be become a better, more thoughtful leader. A business is about far more than financial profit. You need to look at the bottom line from a holistic perspective: Are you ensuring that you’re doing the right things for the community? Is the community better served by your presence as a company?

This past March, I went to Mexico for Global Network Week at EGADE Business School, and it was fantastic. There were students from Mexico, from Peru, from Madrid, from Turkey, from schools across the Global Network for Advanced Management. The quality of the faculty was top-notch. The head of IBM’s entire operations for South America discussed the different economies on the continent, from Brazil to Argentina to Chile. We met with entrepreneurs and innovators—one had set up the first e-commerce retail chain in Mexico, and he shared his challenges in terms of fundraising, motivating workers, and what he learned along the way. It was inspiring.

While I’ve gained a much richer perspective on business at SOM, what’s even more important to me is the network that I’ve built. Every one of my classmates—I know where they’re from, I know what they’re interested in, and I know where to find them if I need to reach them in the next two to five years.  This network is something that I really cherish. And having interacted with so many faculty members, meeting with them personally at school or in their homes, we’ve built relationships, too. I feel that going into my career, these are people I can always call or visit to get advice.
