Engaging with your peers at Yale SOM builds awareness, and those values that everyone brings to the table shapes your definition of what it means to be a leader.

I wanted to expand my leadership skills, and the Master of Advanced Management presented me with a new opportunity to look at leadership from a broader perspective. At Yale SOM, you build leadership skills by engaging with a community, whether you’re working in a club or on a new type of technology. Together, we tackle questions like “How do you change the world?” “How do you innovate?” and “How do you create different things and solutions to large-scale problems?”

As an MAM student, I’ve learned different lessons about leadership from my peers, too. In the classroom, I have a colleague who served in the Israeli military with one set of ideas and another who is a new mother who views the world from a different perspective. Engaging with your peers at Yale SOM builds awareness, and those values that everyone brings to the table shape your definition of what it means to be a leader.

It goes beyond the classroom, too. I serve on the Community Inclusion Council, where we look at issues like managing diversity and how we can be more integrated with the greater New Haven community. Getting a sense of how these issues are approached in the United States has left an impression on me: I think that not only am I a better leader now because of the MAM, but I’ve also learned that both fellowship and leadership can go together. Teamwork doesn’t only have to be about achieving a goal or delivering a product; it’s also about being part of a community and having a chance to collaborate together.
