Before I applied to Yale SOM, I had an extraordinary opportunity to meet a panel of business leaders. This panel spoke extensively about how they were successful and included a serial entrepreneur, a career politician, a pharmaceutical executive, and a venture capitalist. Luckily, these final pot luck dinners managed to stay on the schedule; most people enjoyed them because it was a good way to relax and socialize in a casual setting just prior to finals. The pot lucks were also really successful because SOM can cook! While there are always a lot of people who profess to love eating food, there is generally less people who can actually cook good food as well. At SOM, I found that many of my classmates were able to produce great food at very high levels, even when scaled up for large quantities.Read More
With the smashing success of the Chili Cookoff, Food and Wine Club decided to start a whole new tradition with the 1st Annual SOM Thanksgiving Cookoff. Because everyone had their own Thanksgiving plans, the best time to celebrate at SOM was actually after Thanksgiving. This worked to an advantage by allowing the opportunity to “test” winning recipes on family before trying to claim bragging rights against the rest of the class.Read More
Prior to SOM, I wrote a local food blog in San Diego. When my classmates found out I had a blog, they all encouraged me to re-create the blog for New Haven. Unfortunately with all the time commitments we have at SOM, I've had to limit my food blog posts to a grand total of ZERO so far. Katie Rae ’97, the managing director of a top tech accelerator called Techstars, visited campus this week to talk about entrepreneurship in an event hosted by the Women in Management Club. Rather than lecture about her life or Techstars, Katie took an unexpected approach and interacted with the crowd extensively. It was a great opportunity to get this type of access to an entrepreneur.
