MBA Blog

April 23, 2007

Though it's the last month of school and summer is rapidly approaching, life at SOM remains busy. Like many other bloggers, my experience of the weeks of April have seen lots of headline events coming and going - from the successful internship fund auction a few weeks ago (more to come on that in this entry), to SOM Star Search (a very cool show that really showcased the hidden talents amongst the SOM community), to a fantastic welcome weekend for the class of 2009, to the Garstka cup (annual first year versus second year hockey game), to random pub crawls and other such parties.

This is the first official blog post of my life, so if I break any unwritten blogger rules please forgive me. As one of five leaders of the Marketing Club here at Yale SOM, I have been asked to contribute to this blog in order to give prospective students insight into what the Marketing Club brings to SOM.

Next to the first weekend of the NCAA tournament, Masters’ week has to be my favorite week of the year. The tournament signals the unofficial beginning of spring and I can start to hear my golf clubs calling me. I’m not really big on the splendor of sights and things like that, but watching The Masters on TV (especially HDTV) is such an experience. I haven’t had the privilege of attending the event live, but my father has gone a couple of times and he says that TV doesn’t do the course justice. I can’t wait for Thursday!!

Greetings, everyone. My name is Amy, I'm a first-year student (Class of 2008) here at SOM and this is my first official post on the community blog! Today, classes began for the final quarter--I'm still not sure how this year has flown by so quickly, but I can vouch for the fact that it has been an incredible experience. It's somewhat difficult to describe all that I've learned--academically and personally--in my first year as an MBA student.

They say time flies when you're having fun, but I still can't believe its almost March! My name is Kendra and I am a first year MBA student. I grew up in Rhode Island and then lived in Boston for 7-8 years before coming to New Haven, so I guess that makes me a true New Englander! My background is in education, so business school has definitely been a new and exciting experience for me. Aside from learning all about balance sheets and cash flow statements, its been a great year for so many other reasons.

Hi everyone! My name is Gloria. I'm a second year here at SOM and I'm a student administrator for this site. For more about me, check out the little bio that's linked to this page. So I'm going to run with other people's thoughts on classes and career. I've only got eight weeks of school left, so things are a little different for me than they are for Patrick and Paul. Because I'm a second year, all my classes are electives, and it's been sort of hit-and-miss this school year.

It's been a great trip to Seattle, and tonight I'll be taking the red-eye flight back to the world of Yale SOM. It's been a productive trip. I spent almost 12 hours interviewing with nine people over two days here, but I'm leaving with a verbal offer that should become a formal offer early next week. With that in hand, I need to shift my focus back to school.

Greetings SOM Blog readers! I'm Patrick, a first year MBA student here at Yale SOM. I hail from Toronto, Canada and prior to coming here to pursue an MBA I was an investment banking analyst with a Canadian investment bank. I came to SOM for its strength in the nonprofit sector, small class size, and most of all its unique culture among leading MBA programs. As for the internship hunt (a big topic that is on the minds of probably 99.99% of first-year students at this time), the application process has really only just begun for me.

Hello there. Let me take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Paul and I am currently a first-year student at SOM focusing in Marketing and Strategy. I'm originally from Rockland County, NY, but I grew up in Cleveland, OH where I have spent the last 4+ years working at Progressive Insurance as a project lead for their website. After SOM, I intend to start a career in product development where I can use my technical background and my business knowledge to align product lines to changing consumer demands.
