The student-led Design and Innovation Club helps students explore career options with a focus on innovation. Last summer, some students in the club landed internships at established design and innovation consultancies—including SYPartners and Continuum—while others applied systematic “design thinking” principles within other industries. In a panel sponsored by the D&I Club on September 17, students shared what they learned.

Summer internships give MBA students opportunities to try out new roles, new organizations, even new sectors. For some students, these opportunities are doubled. Students pursuing joint degrees at Yale SOM and the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies are at Yale for three years—so they have two summers to intern. They work on a wide variety of sustainability issues, exploring their career options and honing their skill sets along the way.

This year has been just as rich as my first first – my classes have been challenging, I’ve gone to incredible talks, and my classmates have pushed me to think in new and different ways. Summer provides unique opportunities to take our new skills and apply them in real world settings. Prospective students often overlook the role that summer can play in designing your own curriculum and the great way it can be used to leverage an opportunity in a field that you are interested in.
