Biographies

James Baron

James Baron

William S. Beinecke Professor of Management
Yale School of Management

Professor Baron's research interests include human resources; organizational design and behavior; social stratification and inequality; work, labor markets, and careers; economic sociology; and entrepreneurial companies. Before coming to Yale SOM in 2006, he taught at Stanford's Graduate School of Business from 1982-2006. At Stanford, he taught the MBA core course, Human Resource Management. He was co-director of the Stanford Project on Emerging Companies (SPEC), a large-scale longitudinal study of the organizational design, human resource management practices, and financial and non-financial performance measures of entrepreneurial firms in Silicon Valley. Papers based on the project appeared in leading disciplinary journals, and an overview of the project in California Management Review won the 2003 Accenture Award for making “the most important contribution to improving the practice of management.”

He is the author, with Stanford economist David M. Kreps, of a textbook, Strategic Human Resources: Frameworks for General Managers (John Wiley & Sons, Inc.). Baron is also a regular contributor to leading sociology and organization journals, such as the American Sociological Review and Administrative Science Quarterly. His research has also been published in influential journals in economics and social psychology.

Beth is eBay Inc’s Senior Vice President of Human Resources. eBay Inc is a Fortune 200 global commerce platform and payments leader that delivers flexible and scalable solutions that fuel merchant growth. As eBay Inc’s CHRO, Beth is responsible for all aspects of the company’s human resources capabilities designed to drive the performance of the business including, recruiting, learning and development, compensation and benefits, organization design and the continuing evolution of the company’s culture. Prior to joining eBay, Beth was the Chief Talent Officer of WPP Group plc, one of the world’s leading communication services groups, where she was also an executive director. Before WPP, she was a principal with McKinsey & Company where she was a strategy and organization consultant. While at McKinsey, Beth co-authored The War for Talent based on McKinsey research that demonstrated the link between better talent management practices and better business performance.

Beth sits on the board of the eBay Foundation, the company’s philanthropic and social innovation arm. She is a member of the advisory board of Bulger Partners, a private investment bank. She sits on the advisory board of YaleWomen and the industry advisory board of the Jay H. Baker Retailing Center of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Beth holds a B.S.E. degree with a concentration in Finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and an MPPM from the Yale School of Management.

Jeremy and his Co-CEO, Terri Long, have recently completed a new book which distills the essential rules that ensure companies fully use all of their talent to drive innovation day in and day out. The book will be published by John Wiley & Sons in the spring of 2014.

Prior to developing the Idea Harvest™ process, Jeremy was a consultant at McKinsey & Co., Inc. Before attending Yale SOM, Jeremy spent several years in a variety of positions in both the legislative and executive branches of government focusing on social services delivery.

Jeremy currently sits on the Yale SOM Board of Advisors as well as on the board of the Justice Stevens Public Interest Summer Fellowship for Yale Law School and for Chicago-Kent College of Law. Jeremy’s wife, Nancy Marder (’80 BA Yale College, ’87 JD Yale Law School) clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens. Jeremy and Nancy have created the Fellowship at these two law schools to honor Justice Stevens. Jeremy has been a longtime supporter of the Boys and Girls Club of America including serving the role of Vice Chair of their annual fundraising dinner. Jeremy also served on the Obama for President Illinois Finance Committee.

Jeremy holds a BA degree in History from Yale College and an MBA from Yale School of Management.

Jock Reynolds is the Henry J. Heinz II Director of the Yale University Art Gallery. He earned a B.A. from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and an M.F.A. from the University of California at Davis. From 1973 to 1983, he was an Associate Professor and Director of the Graduate Program at the Center for Experimental and Interdisciplinary Art at California State University at San Francisco, and also a co-founder of New Langton Arts, one of San Francisco’s premier alternative artists’ spaces. From 1983 to 1989, he served as the Executive Director of the Washington Project for the Arts, a multi-disciplinary visual artists’ organization in Washington, D.C. He then became Director of the Addison Gallery of American Art at Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts, in 1989, a position he held until assuming the directorship of the Gallery in 1998.

For his work as an artist, Reynolds has garnered numerous grants and awards, including two NEA Visual Artists Fellowships and multiple NEA Art in Public Places project awards. Frequently made in collaboration with his wife, Suzanne Hellmuth, his artwork has been exhibited broadly in the realms of visual art and theater and is represented in the collections such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum, MoMA, the Walker Art Center, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, University of Washington, J. Paul Getty Museum, the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts, the Harvard University Art Museums.

Among his latest curatorial projects is Sol LeWitt: A Wall Drawing Retrospective, a collaboration of the Yale University Art Gallery, MASS MoCA, and the Williams College Museum of Art, which opened in November of 2008 and will remain on public view through 2033. He also co-curated the Gallery’s internationally traveling photographic retrospective Robert Adams: The Place We Live. He has overseen the major renovation, expansion, and reinstallation of the Yale University Art Gallery’s exhibition, teaching, and collection facilities, which opened to great acclaim in December 2012.

Laura R. Walker is President and CEO of New York Public Radio, comprised of WNYC-FM, WNYC-AM, WQXR, New Jersey Public Radio, The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space and digital properties -- including wnyc.org and wqxr.org. Its programming reaches 11.5 million people each month. Ms. Walker has overseen the development of groundbreaking programming that has changed the sound of public radio including: Radiolab, Freakonomics Radio, On the Media, Studio 360, The Takeaway and Radio Rookies. During her tenure, New York Public Radio has been honored with seven George Foster Peabody Awards and two Alfred I. DuPont Columbia University Awards for its work.

Under her leadership, New York Public Radio completed a $62.9 million capital campaign to finance its new headquarters and ambitious programming. In 2009, it acquired WQXR from The New York Times Company, and continues its legacy of serving New York as a full-time classical music station. Ms. Walker joined the organization in 1996 to oversee the transformation of WNYC from a city-owned agency into an independent non-profit.

In 2009, Ms. Walker was named one of New York City’s Most Powerful Women by Crain’s New York Business. In 2008, Ms. Walker was recognized with an Edward R. Murrow Award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. In addition to the New York Public Radio Board of Trustees, Ms. Walker sits on the boards of Saint Ann’s School, the Women’s Forum, Inc., and the Yale Center for Customer Insights. She is the Chair of the Hudson Square Business Improvement District and the Station Resource Group. Ms. Walker holds an MBA from the Yale School of Management and a BA in History, magna cum laude, from Wesleyan University.
