J. Gregory Dees ‘81, founding faculty director of the Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship (CASE) at Duke's Fuqua School of Business, passed away on December 20. Greg’s mind was a unique blend of wit, graciousness, smarts and generosity. Following SOM, after a stint with McKinsey, Greg got his Ph. D. in philosophy at Johns Hopkins. He returned to SOM to begin his teaching career, moving to Harvard Business School and then to Duke in 2001. Greg is widely credited with launching the academic study of social entrepreneurship. His life’s work embodied SOM’s mission to “educate leaders for business and society.”
His leadership, acumen and warmth will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Several memorials to Greg are published here: http://blogs.fuqua.duke.edu/casenotes/2014/01/04/in-memory-of-greg-dees/
