Advice from Alumni

During first-year Orientation, full-time MBA students begin an intensive process of learning about career paths and companies—and eventually, choosing what industry to pursue. This year, the full-day Career Immersion event featured more than 20 panels and dozens of Yale SOM alumni, giving first-years the chance to hear about the finance, consulting, marketing, energy, entertainment, entrepreneurial, and education sectors from those currently involved in them. Advice is practical, drawing on the alumni’s own job search experiences and their careers since graduation.

Jason Arvenites ’12, a consultant at Bain & Company, said that when he was preparing for his first-year internship interviews, his fellow students were invaluable. “I found second-year students with similar backgrounds and interests as me and I talked to them about their career search and how they approached the recruiting process,” he said. “I then found about 10 in my class who were just as dedicated to getting into consulting and we practiced all of November and December for our interviews. And it was all incredibly helpful.”
