Meet the Press Host Chuck Todd on the Tasks Facing the Next President

Poynter Fellowship in Journalism Lecture

A Conversation with Chuck Todd

The next president of the United States will need to address a number of major issues facing the country, said NBC News Political Director and Meet the Press host Chuck Todd during a Poynter Fellowship in Journalism lecture at the Yale School of Management on April 28. These include assuaging Americans’ “economic anxiety,” figuring out how the U.S. can and should use its superpowers globally, and fixing a “broken political marketplace.”

Todd called the last issue “the single most important issue facing the president.”

“The rules of politicking are broken—campaign finance, the ways we draw our districts, the way we vote; this is what we have to fix,” said Todd. “We have to reorient the relationship between government and the American worker, we have to rewrite our workers’ comp laws, we’ve got to rework retirement laws… We’ve got to restructure a lot of things, [and] you can’t do that when you have a broken political system.”

Todd also shared insights into the Republican and Democratic primaries, and discussed the challenges that journalists face in covering politics.

The conversation, which was streamed live, was moderated by Yale SOM Dean Edward A. Snyder. Questions came from members of the audience as well as students elsewhere in the Global Network for Advanced Management.
